Odis Sanford Sanders

OXFORD - The funeral service for Odis Sanford Sanders, 85, will be at noon Saturday, June 9, at Lake Baptist church, 24709 Hwy. 35, Sardis, with interment in the church cemetery. Visitation prior to the service. Sanders died May 30 in Oxford Veteran's Retirement Home. He was a World War II Navy Veteran and fought as a Seabee in the South Pacific. He coached little league for over 20 years and was known as "Uncle Odis" to all his players and friends. He was an officer with the Frayser Recreation Association and was inducted into the Memphis Baseball Hall of Fame in 1996. During his time as a baseball coach, he was a great influence on many youth in the Memphis and Shelby County area. He was a 32nd degree Mason with the Frayser Lodge in Memphis. He retired from Firestone Rubber and Tire Company after 30 years. He was preceded in death by his wife Nancy Marie and a daughter Cheryl Oscher. He leaves a daughter, Alice (Steven) Tillie, of Pope; a son, Fred (Rhonda) Sanders, of Pope; two brothers, Doug Sanders, and Junior Sanders; two sisters, Mable Parks, and Helen Brown; 11 grandchildren; and 21 great grandchildren.
