SOUTHAVEN — The funeral service for Daniel Louis Denning will be at 1 p.m. today at Graceview Presbyterian Church in Southaven with interment in Autumn Woods in Olive Branch. Visitation from noon until service time. Denning died Dec. 9 of complications from cancer. He was born Dec. 31, 1951 in Elmhurst, Ill. and graduated from Evangel College in Springfield, Mo. and earned his MA in theology from Wheaton College. He also pursued an MA in computer science at Ole Miss. He worked at FedEx as a technical advisor. He was a member of Graceview Presbyterian Church and was a deacon and elder. He taught adult Sunday school, was a choir member and headed several committees. He leaves his wife, Emily; children, Linda, Michael, Stephen (Elizabeth), Mark, and Rosemary; father, Clifford; siblings Diane Denning, Patricia Denning, Kathy Guerin (Mark), Karin Whitt (Tom), Mark Denning (Valerie), and Tammy La Ponte (Carl); sister-in-law Linda Neeley (Paul); as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Rosemary Denning. Memorials for Daniel may be sent to Graceview Presbyterian Church in Southaven or to the donor’s choice.

He was born July 4, 1926, in Rome, Ga. and was an Army veteran of World War II. He leaves his wife of 56 years, Mary Payne of Southaven; four daughters, Ann Marie McKenna of Southaven, Sandy Lynn Branson of Germantown, Tenn., Karen Louise Bennett of Riverside, Calif., Mary Victoria Simmons of Murrieta, Calif.; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister, Margaret Robinson.

She was born February 17, 1936 in Water Valley to the late Woodrow and Grace Ashmore Porter. She was an outstanding basketball player for Water Valley High School. She was a retired accountant for Kroger, Inc. She enjoyed wildlife, feeding her birds, gardening, reading, traveling and collecting angels. She leaves a daughter, Judy C. Brewer (Jeff) of Water Valley; her son, Chuck Stone of Southaven; five grandchildren, J.P. HORN LAKE — The funeral service for Jewel F. "Butch" Bain, 71, were Wednesday at Boulevard Baptist Church with interment in Pinecrest Memorial Gardens in Water Valley with Forest Hill South Funeral Home in charge. Bain died Dec. 12. He was a retired U.S. Marine Veteran, serving three tours in Vietnam. Bain also retired after 19 years from Sharp Manufacturing. He is preceded in death by his father, Frank A. Bain. He leaves his wife of 29 years, Brenda K. Bain; three daughters, Julie Piersing, Beth Holderfield, and Christina Denton; two sons, Barry Bain and Sgt. Ronald H. Maxwell II; his mother Elizabeth A. Bain; two sisters, Ann Pierson and Linda Ashton; two brothers, James Bain and Pat Bain; 10 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

He leaves his wife of more than 52 years, Betty McColm; son, Lonnie McColm (Sharon); one daughter, Connie Vaughn (Buford), all of Southaven; brother, Larry McColm of Kansas City, Mo.; sister, Linda Williams of Blue Springs, Mo.; four grandchildren, Amiee Carpenter, Ronny Decker, Dustin McColm, and Derrick McColm; and eight great grandchildren. SOUTHAVEN — The funeral service for James O. "Sonny" Medlin, 74, was Thursday at Forest Hill South with interment in Forest HIll South Cemetery. Medlin died Dec. 12. He spent his youth in Elaine, Ark. He served in the National Guard, worked as a wallpaper contractor and in the maintenance department for the DeSoto County School System. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Hernando and the Memphis Kennel Club and also served on the board of directors. He enjoyed fishing and making bass lures. His parents E. F. Medlin and Catherine Wommack Goodell preceded him in death. He leaves his wife, Patricia Hale Medlin; daughter, Leann J. Medlin of Southaven and son, James A. Medlin of Horn Lake; three sisters, Sandra Lewis of Mattawan, Mich., Juanita Medlin of Corinth and Cindy Goodell of Memphis; also two brothers, Charles E. Medlin of Wartburgs, Tenn. and David L. OLIVE BRANCH — The funeral service for Corbitt Collins, 91, will be at 2 p.m. Dec. 26 with visitation from 1 p.m. until service time at Brantley Funeral Home in Olive Branch. Collins died Dec. 17 at the Mississippi State Veteran’s Home in Oxford. He served in World War II in the U.S. Army 550th Airborne Infantry and was one of the first men to parachute into the Battle of the Bulge. In 2009, Corbitt was honored for his service to our country by being taken to the National World War II Museum in Washington, DC, by the Honor Flight Network. He retired from Ford Motor Company after 34 years as an electrician. He was preceded in death by his wife, Laureda Collins, in 2001. He leaves two daughters, Doris Thompson (Bill) and Judith Pounders (Daniel Lee); son, Jerry Collins (Theresa); six grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and his sister, Ada Cornett. SOUTHAVEN — The funeral service for James William Wages Jr. was Sunday at Brantley Funeral Home with interment in the Veterans Cemetery in Memphis at a later date. Wages died Dec. 13 in Houston, Texas. He was born in Memphis Sept. 17, 1947 and was a 1965 graduate of Oakhaven High School. He attended Northwest Junior College and was in the National Honor Society. He was employed at Roadway Express for 30 years and was awarded the “You’re Number One” Employee of the Year. He enjoyed competitive golf, bicycling and hunting. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy and served during the Vietnam era as a Sonarman. He was married to Linda Futrell Wages of Memphis for 43 years. They resided in Desoto County over 30 years and were winter residents of Gulfport, where he was a seasonal employee of Pine Bayou Golf Course on the Seabee Base. He is the son of James W. Wages Sr. of Bartlett, and his mother, Hazel H. Wages preceded him in death in 2003. He also leaves his brother, Mark Wages of Southaven; sister, Lindsay Wages Conner of Bartlett; sister-in-law Joanna Wages of Southaven; brothers-in-law James Futrell of Atlanta, Ga. and Wayne Futrell of Nesbit; mother-in-law Clara Futrell of Southaven; many good friends from around the country that he made from being a “full-time RV’er” since his retirement. He was a member of the Church of Christ, was an Army veteran, and a member of VFW Post 10567 in Southaven and American Legion Post 134 in Horn Lake. He leaves two sons, Rodney A. Jones (Larena) of Horn Lake and Austin R. Jones of Southaven; four sisters, Norma Jean Stark (Ron) of Rio Rancho, N.M., Bettye Sue Teague (Bill), Dorothy Ann Burns (Nathan), and Alice Juanita Twilla (Phil), all of Dyersburg, Tenn.; one grandchild, Ethan R. Interment will be in Twin Oaks Memorial Gardens. Braddus died Dec. 19 at Baptist DeSoto. He was born December 20, 1941 in Paris, Tenn. to the late Carter and Neppie Broaddus and was a Baptist. He worked 15 years with the Illinois Central Railroad and in 1975 became a federal agent for the Interstate Commerce Commission, retiring in 1995. He leaves his wife of 28 years, Sonja K. Broaddus of Hernando; two daughters, Laurie Townsley (James Joseph Townsley of Cabot, Ark.) and Rhonda Anthony of North Little Rock, Ark.; one grandson, James Dalton Townsley; and many other family and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Linda Ann Broaddus. The family requests that any memorials be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

SOUTHAVEN — The funeral service for Claude “Sam” Houston, 83, was Wednesday at Twin Oaks Funeral Home with interment in Twin Oaks Memorial Gardens. Houston died Dec. 19 after a long illness. He was born June 27, 1928 to Edward Brooks and Sarah Gladys Houston, the fifth of ten children. He retired from the Air Force after 20 years of service in 1968 and went on to work for Keathley’s Bakery, Film Transit and Walmart. Sam loved life and never met a stranger and never grew tired of telling a good joke. He leaves his wife of 62 years, Alberta; three daughters, Betty Thompson and Vickie Preston of Southaven and Teresa Novay (Toby) of Sarah; six grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; two brothers, Clifton Houston of Ashland and Richard Houston of Seymour, Wisc.; two sisters, Jestel Wilson of Ashland and Jewel VanZant of Hickory Flat; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and his beloved dog, Missy. He was a member of Goodman Oaks Church of Christ.
